Senior citizens and changing societies

The Robert Schuman Institute (RSI) and the European Seniors’ Union (ESU), in cooperation with the Hungarian Senior’s Council and with the support of the Fidesz – Hungarian Civil Union Parliamentary Group and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stfitung, Hungarian Office held a joint conference entitled Senior citizens and changing societies on 26 – 27 May in Budapest, Hungary.

The conference included a joint session with the Hungarian Seniors’ Council’s working groups entitled “Active ageing and the participation of seniors in everyday life” on 26 May, taking place in the Hungarian Parliament. The discussed issues included the seniors’ policy of the Hungarian government, the Hungarian pension system and the challenges of the ageing Europe. The 3 working groups of the Seniors’ Council: Seniors’ media, Multi-generational family leisure sport program and Health and social issues of the elderly care presented the results of their work. On 27 May the programme continued with an independent workshop entitled “Active ageing and the participation of seniors in public and political life” for ESU member and partner organisations, with discussions on the interests and regional differences in the participation of senior citizens in European politics as well as on how senior’s wellbeing and participation in society can be improved.
