How Russian and Chinese propaganda takes advantage of COVID-19 pandemic?

COVID-19 pandemic is posing a number of serious challenges for the European states not only in healthcare sector, but in many other spheres of public life. One of the most underestimated threats of the pandemic is the authoritarian Russia and China gaining momentum on the global political scene and and their domination in the information realm. We will look at the methods and narratives the two states are using to promote their agenda on the international stage against the background of the coronavirus pandemic.

We are continuing with our traditional weekly #StayOn talks focusing on the most relevant issues of political, economic and social nature. On Thursday May 28, at 17h CET we will be delighted to give the floor to our alumnus from Belarus, Zmicier Mickiewicz, who will provide an overview of the basic messages and techniques, deployed by Russian and Chinese propaganda in the foreign media in order to promote their respective agenda and interests in the EU and US, explore the narrative promoted by Russia and China with relation to COVID-19, major goals and methods of Russian coronavirus propaganda in Eastern Europe. We will touch upon the long-term strategy of China, and consequences of Russian and Chinese propaganda for political life of Europe.

Zmicier is a graduate with Minsk State Linguistic University, faculty of Intercultural Communication, with specialization in international political relations. From 2017 until present he has been working as a journalist at Belsat TV, the only Belarusian language independent television channel, in the investigative journalism department. He also helps prepare “Prasviet” weekly analytical program, where he is responsible for conducting interviews as well as creation of analytical video reviews on politics, international relations, national security and defence. Since 2011 Zmicier has been occupying analyst position with “Belarus Security Blog” project, issuing monthly Eurasian security digests as well as covering topics related to information security and terrorism. Also, he is editor-in-chief of “Varta” Magazine – the first independent magazine on national security of Belarus. His main fields of interest include national security and defence (especially information warfare & fighting terrorism), geopolitics and foreign policy (the history of diplomacy in the world and the modern trends in international relations).
