China’s Global Rise and Implications for Europe

****

In the last three decades the world has been observing China’s spectacular economic performance and rising global influence. However, this fact does not imply that it is not facing certain socio-economic, legal and political challenges at present and in the near future. These will of course cause a considerable impact on the country’s relations with the EU, China’s second biggest trade partner. So, what does the future of this relationship look in the foreseeable perspective?

Sino-European relations have been going through some turbulent periods in recent years, in light of rising tensions over security and trade concerns, European criticism of perceived human rights violations in China, as well as application of sanctions and counter-sanctions. This Thursday we will gather again in our virtual space to to discuss the Beijing-Brussels relationship dynamics, examine both sides’ vision for mutual relations, as well as outline challenges facing the realization of this vision.

More specifically, we will look into:

  • The role of China in the global economy, its place in a changing world order, escalating rivalry with the United States, and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on its geopolitical priorities;
  • The state of play in the EU-China diplomatic and economic relations;
  • Challenges Europe is facing at the moment in relation to China’s rise, and will be facing in the future as a consequence of a probably further rise, as well as possible relationship development scenarios.

 Join us on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 17.00 CET in our virtual space on Zoom  to look into these and more!
